Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, was awarded the 2012 Communitas Award by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP) for its dedication to community service and corporate social responsibility.
"This recognition of Huawei's volunteer efforts and socially responsible business practices reflects the significance of the programs they have implemented internationally. We hope that their work inspires others and that they will continue to work with like-minded leaders to make the spirit of Communitas an essential element of every business in our community," said Ed Dalheim, executive director of the AMCP.
As part of Huawei's commitment to responsible corporate citizenship, it works to bridge the digital divide and improve the livelihood of the communities in which it operates.
In Kenya, Huawei launched "Telecom Seeds for the Future," a project that aims to improve the ICT education system in the country through partnerships with local universities, the government, and telecom operators. The project focuses on increasing the ICT talent pool in Kenya to support the development of the local telecommunications industry. In June 2011, Huawei signed a memorandum of understanding with three local universities—Moi University, the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, and University of Nairobi—and with Safaricom, an integrated communications company, to implement this project. To date, more than 209 students have received training at Huawei's East Africa training center, 39 have undergone internships, and 5 have received jobs with Huawei under the MoU.
In Hungary, Huawei created the Huawei Innovative Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship for top students from the leading two local universities, The Budapesti Műszaki Egyetem (Politechnical University of Budapest) and the Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem (University of Economics). From 2011 to 2015, Huawei will provide support to a total of 75 students, who will each receive USD 2000 per year to support the advancement of their education.
In September 2011, Huawei Technologies Poland partnered with the Centrum for Civic Education and Gazeta Wyborcza, a leading Polish daily newspaper, to implement the "School with Class 2.0" program under the auspices of the Polish Minister of Education. The program includes 789 local schools and aims to support the development of key academic, civic, and social skills necessary for young global innovators to flourish. Huawei donated PLN 100,000 (USD 33,000) as well as a number of its wireless modems during the first year of cooperation. "School with Class 2.0" was nominated for the UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Education.
Huawei is a key donator to the Nungtso Charity Foundation (NCF) in Nigeria, a non-governmental organization launched in 2003 focusing on providing care for orphans, underprivileged children in society, and widows. Since 2010, Huawei has donated NGN 5 million (USD 31,500) to the Nungtso Charity Foundation to help provide food, housing, and education.
In Australia, Huawei partners with Tour de Cure to support its fight against cancer. It became a corporate partner in 2011, when it donated AUD 25,000 and provided the "Connecting Communities" support bus for the length of the 1,400 kilometer event route. In 2012, Huawei increased its support of the Tour with a cash sponsorship of AUD 50,000, with Huawei staff participating in the 1,656 kilometer ride from Brisbane to Mission Beach in Queensland, Australia.
