Since we have started using them digitally, we have changed the way we interact with maps. Opening maps.nokia.com on your browser means that, most of the time, you are looking for something and you will be entering some search terms in the appropriate box. It may be the address of the friend you would like to visit or the name of the restaurant where you want to have dinner with your colleagues.
Not such a long time ago, however, we also used to browse atlases, follow roads with our fingers and stop to read the names of exotic cities we wanted to visit. Today we are bringing back that thirst for exploration on maps.nokia.com. Just hover with your mouse on the map and you will see it coming alive and giving you more possibilities to interact: you now get a useful overview of what kind of additional information we have in a specific city to enrich the pure mapping experience.
In fact, as we have told you previously, we believe that there is much more on maps.nokia.com than a map with places and directions. We want to give you the feeling for the cities you are going to visit.
How does it work?
During the last few months, we have been integrating on maps.nokia.com different features to create the ultimate city exploration tool. You can see it in action right here, for the city of Toronto, ON.
Map – this is of course the basic ingredient, accurately designed by professional cartographers, working for the Nokia Location&Commerce business unit
Navigation – no matter whether you are going to walk, drive by car or take the train, we have all the directions for you
Traffic – from local authorities and crowdsourced from Nokia Drive users, to let you know which areas are particularly congested and where it’s less busy
Public transport lines – to give you a visual representation of what lies below the surface
Heat maps – we’ve been collecting millions of points of interest not only to provide you with search results but also to let you know, with heat maps, the best places in town for culture, food, drinks and fun
Travel guides – we have also asked experts (like Lonely Planet) for insider information, weather forecasts and suggestions on what to do and where to go
3D maps – introduced more than one year ago, our photorealistic images are available in 25 cities around the globe; they are not only beautiful, they’re also useful: you can search and plan routes in 3D and get an animated 3D preview of your driving directions
So after you have been discovering a whole new city on maps.nokia.com, reading all the background information from travel guides, understanding its traffic, getting familiar with its public transportation infrastructure and collecting all the places you want to visit, you are ready to go.
With Nokia Maps on your smartphone you will be able to get directions for driving, walking and public transport, see live traffic conditions and synchronise all the places you have saved as favourites on maps.nokia.com. And when you are at those places, you can also add your photos and reviews directly from your Nokia Lumia.
