Staff, researchers and students can now gain access to facilities using a mobile phone with NFC-capabilities
The Telcred access control system works with both contactless smart cards and NFC phones
Strong security with both online and offline lock controllers at EIT ICT Labs, Stockholm
Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) announced that researchers, students and staff will participate in a six month pilot project, where they will able to access European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT ICT) Labs premises at Kista Science City outside Stockholm.
Starting in June, EIT ICT Labs staff, researchers and students will be able to access the Electrum facilities using an NFC based access control system developed by Telcred, a SICS spinoff company. They will have access to entrance doors as well as to meeting rooms and video conferencing facilities. The Telcred solution provides strong security and lock controllers which can function both online and offline, at much lower cost than a traditional online system.
The access control system works with both contactless smart cards and NFC phones and uses the Ericsson cloud-based Trusted Service Manager (TSM) to send and update credentials in the secure element in the phone.
Near Field Communication (NFC) is a technology that enables intuitive use of proximity services such as payments and access to facilities using a contactless smart card or mobile phones. NFC only allows communication between two units to take place when they are within a few centimeters of or tapped against each other and does not require prior pairing of devices.
Richard Anell, Head of IPX, Ericsson says "With this solution, granting access rights to students and researchers becomes very simple. Time limited access rights are sent via the mobile network straight to the visitors’ NFC phones through Ericsson’s TSM." He continues, "It is convenient and flexible, as a visiting researcher from another country could potentially receive a digital "ticket" straight to their phone granting access to the facilities for a limited time and to predefined areas – even before he or she arrives."
Gunnar Landgren, Node Director EIT ICT Labs Stockholm says "It is a breakthrough that staff as well as students will be given the opportunity to get hands on experience of one of the most exciting new mobile technologies, NFC, in their daily activities here at EIT ICT Labs Stockholm." He continues "We get a lot of long and short term visitors and having a flexible, simple access solution is a necessity."
