'Death Grip' affects the Sony Xperia P

During our review of the Xperia P, we noticed that the signal bars on the handset dropped when gripped a certain way. It's not hard to duplicate the problem--as you can see in our video below. While it doesn't affect voice calls, we noticed that it stops data from being sent or received.

However. we were unable to repeat the effect when we tested the handset outdoors. This seems to imply that the issue is prevalent only if you're in an area with low signal strength (i.e. indoors). Gripping the handset loosely also seemed to solve the problem for us.

Attenuation happens in every phone--you just have to touch the antenna. In the Xperia P's case, however, it's very easy to do so.

We've reached out to Sony for a comment.
