Thinking Cities: ICT is changing the game

In the latest Networked Society film, various leading city-thinkers – including Carlo Ratti, Director of the MIT SENSEable City Lab, and Mathieu Lefevre, Executive Director of the New Cities Foundation – discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the 21st century city and how ICT is helping achieve sustainable solutions.

For the first time in history, 52 percent of the world’s population lives in cities.

There are 200,000 new urban dwellers every day and this trend is accelerating; especially in Asia, Africa and Latin America. By 2050, six billion people will live in cities, putting a phenomenal strain on resources and materials.

However, as Geoffrey West – physicist and professor at Santa Fe Institute – shares in the video, while the problems are being generated in cities, so too are the solutions.

The film Thinking Cities covers various topics, such as the science of cities, the talking city, the Trash Track project, the social city and the smart city. It shows how ICT is enabling us to deliver new levels of value in innovative ways – which is a new cultural phenomenon.
