Hola, Opera Mini!

Millions of Mexicans get better mobile web through Telcel partnership

Opera Software announced the rollout of a customized version of its Opera Mini browser to subscribers of Telcel, giving users in Mexico the power of the internet at their fingertips at a very low cost.

Opera Mini is one of the most used mobile browsers with 179 million users worldwide. Starting today, Telcel’s 67 million subscribers in Mexico will now be able to take advantage of Opera Mini’s compression feature, which saves users up to 90% of their time and money.

Existing Opera Mini users on Telcel’s service will automatically be upgraded to the customized versions of Opera Mini and Telcel, which will give users quick access to Telcel’s data plans and other services. “We are thrilled to make Opera Mini part of our offerings to our customers, who need a fast and cost-effective solution to browsing the internet on their mobile devices”, said Alejandro Magaña, VAS Deputy Director, Telcel. “The best part about Opera Mini is it provides a consistent and smartphone-like user experience across a broad range of handsets, including basic phones, which is very useful to our customer base.”

“Opera’s goal is to give the best possible user experience on any device and any network,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “Designed for speed and ease of use, Opera Mini provides insanely fast browsing – up to six times faster than other browsers on both 2G and 3G networks. Giving this capability to Telcel users is very exciting for us.”

Opera’s partnership with Telcel is part of its larger agreement with its parent company America Movil, announced earlier this year, which will bring Opera Mini to its subsidiaries in 18 countries in Latin America with a total of 246 million subscribers.
