Nokia Siemens Networks optical communications certified by US government

Scalable optical networking technology enables increased bandwidth on existing fiber

Nokia Siemens Networks’ optical technology has been accorded Approved Product List (APL) status by the US government’s Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). The certification, awarded in June 2012, allows the Department of Defense (DoD) to purchase and deploy the company’s optical technology, a Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) network based on its hiT7300* platform.

This high capacity (100G) DWDM transmission system allows up to 96 optical channels on a single fiber, with each channel carrying data at 100 gigabits per second. This gives a total capacity of up to 9.6 terabits per second per fiber.

This transmission system from Nokia Siemens Networks cost efficiently supports bandwidth-hungry multimedia applications in multi-haul networks. This technology will enable the DoD to transition to next generation transmission protocols beyond Synchronous Optical Networking (SONET) and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM).

“This US approval is testimony to our optical technology’s capabilities,” said Bob Fennelly, head of the US government and public safety customer team at Nokia Siemens Networks. “With the need to access advanced applications across its defense bases, the DoD’s bandwidth requirement has increased exponentially. Nokia Siemens Networks hiT7300 platform is scalable and able to support the DoD’s current and future demand for bandwidth.”

Nokia Siemens Networks’ approved optical networking equipment is based on its hiT7300 platform that uses coherent CP-QPSK** technology. This is part of the company’s Liquid Transport architecture that can implement coherent transmission and advanced switching across existing network infrastructures. This robust, coherent format allows a rapid, cost-effective transition to 100G line speeds and enables lower latency (less delay) in data transmission.

Approved Product List status is granted by DISA’s Joint Interoperability Test Command organization. Its remit includes testing equipment against DoD required functionality, interoperability and security for communications systems. The test process is rigorous and comprehensive, typically taking months to complete the multiple areas of test and evaluation.
